This site is a journal documenting the paths I’ve chosen to keep my body healthy and pain free, my mind calm but sharp, and my soul carefree and satisfied.

This site is a journal documenting the paths I’ve chosen to keep my body healthy and pain free, my mind calm but sharp, and my soul carefree and satisfied.

I strive to achieve this life as drug free as possible. The challenge increases with each passing day!

As I age it seems I find a new joint causing me pain or annoyance every day. The ordinary routines I practiced for years as a young adult such as swimming and running are now haunting my knees, shoulders and neck while I find without that regular exercise my body chemistry has lost its way leaving me with increasing bad cholesterol and nose-diving good cholesterol.

Honestly, I never knew there was a good vs. bad battle between the cholesterols!

I am on the other side of the hill, heading toward the backside of middle age. It’s not a pretty picture! It is, in fact a challenge to creep to the bathroom each morning after taking out my aggression on the alarm clock and it is sometimes horrifying to catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror. Sometimes it’s down right scary because I think to myself, “Who let that old hag in here?”

The scary part is knowing that I am the old hag inside that deteriorating husk in the mirror.

I’ve tried to be a good patient when it comes to twice yearly dental exams, routine physicals and recommended disease prevention testing. I will admit that I find it infuriating that I have to use some of my very limited vacation days from work to schedule some doctor visits and tests.

That just doesn’t seem fair! You want me to use a vacation day to have my pretty puppies squeezed for x-rays? Vacation days are few and far between! Colonoscopy and mammogram appointments are not vacations but it seems you can’t schedule either one on a Saturday or Sunday – thus, I need to use vacation days!

I am a baby boomer who will most likely work until the day my gnarled old knuckles freeze one last time around my good friend, the mouse. I just hope they find me at the desk before they turn the lights out at five. I’d hate to be sitting there in front of the monitor for hours before someone realizes I’m being much too quiet for comfort.

So, being that I’m of limited financial means with no pension and an IRA that wouldn’t put food on the table for a week, I must find ways to stay healthy, keep working and keep as much of my hard earned money as I can squirrel away. Even with a health care plan, prescription drugs are still an expense I don’t want not to mention the chemicals I don’t want in my body as I’ve found I need other drugs to counter act the side effects caused by the first medication.

This is my path to keep the general good health I have and to keep my mind drug and stress free so that as I make that cross over from midlife madness to a serene senior I can feel good, look good (well, I can try!) and do it all with a routine of deep tissue massage, healthy diet, and mind therapy through meditation and a simplified lifestyle.

(That means spend less, need less, stress less!)
